Dear Readers:

As many of you know, Preston hosted an intimate evening with two dozen special guests in our New York office. The team had such a wonderful time having the chance to meet and speak with so many of you and Preston could not stop talking about all of the wonderfully talented and vivacious planners, designers, photographers, and florists who came from far and wide to join us.

During my engagement with so many of the guests, one question kept finding its way into our conversations: “How do you do it all?”  My response? I don’t. I am very fortunate to be a planner who works alongside skilled labor in every area of events. Preston designs, I plan, Kelly Irwin Rutty heads production, etc. This is an important footnote. Understanding that no man or woman is an island or an expert in every area is, I believe, a fundamental key to a successful event. Finding people who also understand this and respect all areas of expertise (their own and that of others) is another component.

The idea that one person can be a Jack or Jane of all trades is ambitious and respectable in theory, but self-defeating in practice. Doing it is not impossible, but doing it well consistently is another story. The bottom line is that it’s important to understand and respect the value of the area you work in and the best way to do that is to know which one you are in.

Today, I want you all to really think about your area of expertise –where is it now and where do you want it to be? Are you willing to sharpen your focus, polish your skill-set and shine side-by-side with those who compliment you with skills that, together, create what Preston calls magic.

With a happy heart,

Kathy
