According to expert studies, a whopping 70% of first impressions are based on what we look like, and a big portion of that are the clothing we choose to wear.  As planners and professionals, it’s essential that we look polished, professional and approachable. We’ve all heard about the term “Dress for Success,” but what does that really mean?

Defining your style can be a bit tricky. This is especially true when there are so many interesting industries and we all have our own individual sense of style. Regardless of what industry you are in, first impressions are usually the ones that last. Bottom line: It pays to pay attention to what you are wearing.

This topic is near and dear to my heart because I absolutely love fashion. Talking about fashion is a natural extension of my personality (I am all about self-expression) but I write this blog because I fully understand that the style choices we make can not only impact how others see us, but how we see ourselves. The clothes we choose can boost or decrease our self-esteem instantaneously. It’s incredible how self-conscious we become when we are not comfortable about how we look. If we are not careful, this can impact how we engage and interact with others and even affect our productivity.

A few things that have worked for me when planning events or meeting with clients:

Always keep in mind the dress code for a specific event this will save you from making things uncomfortable for you or the your client.

When in doubt, always dress up. You can never be overdressed.

Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight or too loose.

Stay away from blouses or dresses that require you to continuously adjust them.

Always wear clothing that will highlight your competence, not your body. There is a time and a place for everything.

Regardless of what you expect your client to wear, dress the part. Don’t assume that it’s ok to be underdressed if they are.

Do you agree or disagree with placing an emphasis on presentation? Does the way you are dressed impact your mood or confidence?

With a happy heart,

Kathy
