I know this is a very tricky subject and the industry’s opinions are very divided.

While we are a central part of a magnificent celebration and adrenaline is running high for all, we should always remember what our role and places are at these events. I know many tend to sweep this under the rug, but today I’d like to understand where we all stand on this issue. Personally, I refuse to loose my senses during the time that my clients depend on me to keep it all together for them. Perhaps it’s because I’m old school, but I wholeheartedly believe that we must keep the integrity of our brand, the seamless execution of the event, and our values intact. These are all equally important.

At times, we have worked alongside our bride and groom for so many months that it feels like we are family. The truth is we are not. Some of our clients are kind and offer us a drink during the event as a token of their appreciation.  Whether you take them up on it or not is an individual choice that must be made in a very prudent manner; without forgetting why you are there in the first place.

I’ll just come right out and say it… I’m quite disappointed with vendors that take constant trips to the bar as if the celebration were in their honor. Your behavior during any event should be to always have your client’s best interest in mind. Drinking on the job poses a huge liability for you, especially if you are a business owner. If you are not careful your behavior can become erratic and can disrupt the entire flow and execution of an event. Planners are the keepers of the event. We must learn to identify potential risks and be able to resolve unexpected issues as they occur; so being in the right state of mind is extremely important.

It’s inevitable that we will be in a festive mood, after all, the evening represents a major milestone in our client’s life and another successful event for us.  I want to celebrate too!  So, how do we celebrate appropriately? I have a little ritual that I do with my planners on site; it usually takes place after the cake cutting and very close to the end of the event. At the end of the night, I gather them all to thank them for their hard work and a job well done over a glass of wine. This makes them, as well as myself, feel a sense of accomplishment, gratitude, and allows us to celebrate at the same time.

Readers: What are your thoughts on this sensitive issue? How do you celebrate another successful event under your belt?

Best,
