Dear Readers:

I love how most folks maintain a very romantic idea of what working in the floral, design and event industry entails.  Many think that because we plan parties, our business is run like one big party.  Those of us working in it know that nothing could be further from the truth.  Even though we get the privilege of working in the rewarding world of bringing the dreams of our clients to life, success in the event business requires hard work and long hours.  As a florist, I learned that 80% of the time is spent seeking and schlepping flowers and 20% is making the arrangements.

Being a New Yorker who lives in the city that never sleeps (truly), I have had to teach myself how to wind down.  The only way I know how to do this is to actually leave the city, either for business or to play abroad. While we all have our different ways of decompressing, my favorite has always been laying by the ocean with a good book in hand.  This weekend, I plan to do just that by heading out to the Hamptons with my wonderful husband, Theo, and our very good friends.

I don’t know about you, but I am always in search of a good, fun summer read.  At the moment, I am reading Beautiful Ruins by Jesse Walter, a wonderful book recommended by my good friend, Marcy Blum.  What a page turner!  I am loving every moment!

I also do my best to have a book on-hand to feed my spirit.  At the moment, I am enjoying What About Now? by Gina Lake.  The book does a great job of reminding me about the importance (and beauty) of living in and savoring each moment.

In today’s blog, I thought it might be nice to share our recommendations and make a summer reading list.  The books can be of any genre: spiritual, fun, inspiring, you name it!

Whether in the United States and celebrating the Fourth of July or abroad, I hope you will take some time to relax this weekend.

What are your plans?

Have a wonderful and safe holiday and a lovely weekend.

Preston
