Kathy Romero's blog: What I Don't Want to Be

Dear Readers:

Each year on my birthday I create a new set of goals; it’s just my thing. I find that it puts my year into perspective and provides me a sense of focus. I see my birthday as most people see the new year. For the past few days I’ve been really thinking about the things that I set out to do last year when I turned 38. You see, I do the same thing each year: I set goals with the highest of expectations and hold myself accountable for the things I want to do in those following 12 months.

Today, I’m taking a different approach. I actually want to base my “birthday goal list” on the things I don’t want to do, and the things I know for sure I don’t want to become in the next year. My gift to me and you today is to invite you to do the same: If you haven’t done so, take some time to discover who you truly are. Take the time pay more attention to the things that really matter to you the most. Create goals with a clear purpose in mind. Give room in your life for clarity.

I’d love to stay true to who I am. I’ll promise to enhance the “good” and continue to eliminate the “bad.” There is power in being you, in being genuine, and defending the things that you stand for. Happiness is a choice. Don’t settle for anything less. Happiness is my reality.

Don’t make room for the sense of entitlement. I’ve really focused on the actions of some of the people in my life and perhaps that’s why my circle of true friends has gotten smaller (I’m actually OK with that). It amazes me how emotionally impaired some people are. I don’t ever want to be in a position where I forget to say “Thank You.” I want to surround myself with like-minded folks that give back and don’t take things for granted, ever. Don’t stop dreaming big. All things are possible when you believe, when you do the hard work, when you take action, but above all when you operate from the heart.

Finally, please remember that whatever makes you smile the biggest is what you deserve the most.

Thirty-eight, I’m grateful for all that you brought me (and even the things that you didn’t). Thirty-nine, I welcome you with open arms, an open mind and an open heart. I’m ready!

With a Happy Heart,

Kathy
